Measuring the U.S. economy’s strength is challenging, so a new index is leveraging artificial intelligence to get the job done. Launched on Monday, the Zeta Economic Index uses generative AI to analyze “trillions of behavioral signals,” primarily consumer activities, to assess growth and stability.
The Decode:
Core Function: The index evaluates both online and offline activities across eight categories, integrating traditional economic indicators like unemployment and retail sales with high-frequency data.
Unique Approach: “The algorithm ingests behavioral and transaction data from 240 million Americans,” said David Steinberg, CEO of Zeta Global. “Instead of looking at data in the rearview mirror, we aim to provide a 30-day advanced snapshot of the economy.”
Eight Verticals: The index measures automotive activity, dining and entertainment, financial services, health care, retail sales, technology, and travel.
Stability Measure: It also assesses consumers’ ability to cope with economic fluctuations.
The Zeta Economic Index offers a more comprehensive view than traditional metrics like GDP. In June, both its economic and stability scores were positive, with readings of 66 and 66.1, indicating an “active” and “stable” economy, respectively. “This approach not only considers existing indicators but also examines actual consumer spending and behavior,” Steinberg said, promising better economic forecasts.
